Fascinating.

Reminds me a little of how CB 10 codes got adopted. Some codes penetrated so deeply into society that even non-CBers were using them.

Aside from my main job(s), I am also a paid on call firefighter. We use a certain amount of number codes and letter codes when talking to each other, but it is nowhere near as pervasive for us as it is with these cops.

I didn't get that tone from ES&L, but I read it for fun, and very uncritically. I may have to rethink this. I expect good work from the trained and experienced. Took me awhile to be more patient and respectful of new people at work I was charged to train. Thank you, I will try to remember this, you are quite right.

No, in all seriousness, this is actually why I didn't read more than a page of Truss' book. Mockery gets us nowhere (except when we in the know mock each other for fun, because we're mean that way); you can't inspire someone to learn by belittling them. I love what this police department is doing -- it absolutely plays to the idea of multiple intelligences and multiple ways of learning, rather than the "beat it into them with a stick and if they don't get it they must be stupid" theory.
